Lauriane Daphne Carl (they/she) studied Fine Arts at Universität der Künste Berlin and École des Beaux-Arts Nationale Supérieure de Paris. In February 2025, they successfully completed their Meisterschüler degree and were nominated for the UdK Berlin Art Award and Karl Hofer Scholarship. Their works in sculpture, installation, writing, and performance have been exhibited in Berlin, Paris, and London, including at The Fairest, Trauma Bar und Kino, Art Paris, Positions Art Fair, Photobook Cafe and Culterim Galerie.
Carl is a French-German research artist based in Berlin and Marseille. In their interdisciplinary interwoven practice, they explore the dialectic between desire and destruction against the backdrop of an unequal power imbalance. Aggression, resilience, and resistance of women, female-read, and queer subjects within capitalism, along with their imposed contradictions, are explored through contemporary pop culture, psychoanalysis as well as biblical, folkloric, and ancient mythology as cultural data carriers or archetypal symbolism.
Horned marble-like soaps, jumping at the viewer like scapegoats about to be sacrificed; self-defense weapons made out of sugar paste and pubes; colorfully glazed mountains shaped by fist imprints and the head of Medusa; collapsing votive candles on watery stainless steel, a church window of queer animals escaping their frame; glowing latex melons sewn together with medical threads  - Carl transforms materials into abject and confrontational forms that weaponise vulnerability to transform shame into power.
Inspired by artists like Eva Hesse, Sigalit Landau, Louise Bourgeois, Alina Szapocznikow, David Wojnarowicz, Julia Phillips, Haegue Yang, and Rachel Whiteread, they create spaces where subject-object relations remain undefined, building new magical mythologies that transcend binaries. Their installations evoke the subconscious, bridging the intangible gaps between language, symbolism, and subjectivity. Carl’s biomorphic and oftentimes formless installations blur the boundaries of the media used. By emphasizing the unstable, the marginal, and the ephemeral, their practice challenges the very foundation of aesthetic hierarchies and fixed meanings, undoing structures of knowledge and power.
Beyond their process-oriented studio practice, Carl engages in collaborative projects with various collectives and curates exhibitions, performances, and club nights to bridge the gap between inaccessible white cube art spaces and queer club culture. These events historically center the voices of the marginalised (for example queer or trans femmes,  sex workers, …) and have raised thousands of euros for initiatives like Grassroots Gaza, Together for the Democratic Republic of Congo, LesMigraS, and more.
Carl also organizes free self-defense and Muay Thai classes for women and LGBTQIA+ people, combating the rise of right-wing violence and femicide in Germany. These initiatives underscore Carl’s belief in sharing resources and tools for protection and resistance as essential acts of healing and empowerment.
